The Bush White House and Why I Think Bin Laden Will Be Captured Right Before the Election

Op-Ed Columnist: Maestro of Chutzpah

In the interest of full disclosure: Yes, I am a liberal. A few years ago, I purposely joined the American Civil Liberties Union and Amnesty International just so I could claim to be a card-carrying one. I am also what Europeans call a woman of a certain age, though in my head and in my heart, I'm somewhere between the ages of 18 and 30, maybe.

I watched the 2000 presidential election with bemused distraction until that fateful hijacking of the Constitution by the Supreme Court. To this day, I don't understand why no one argued for the election debacle to play out until a vote could be taken in the House of Representatives. The country wasn't in danger; there were no riots in the streets; it has happened before in US history.

As soon as the die was cast, I decided to keep an open mind. He may not have won, but Bush was legal. He was the president. I'd give him the benefit of the doubt.

From this vantage point in 2004, I have to tell you, I can't stand this presidency. The more I see, the more I learn, the more disgusted I become. I am now completely cynical. Not only because of this naked attempt to drain social security for the benefit of his buddies, but also because I will bet my entire life savings that he will somehow produce Bin Laden within two weeks of November 7, 2004, election day. Talk about a sense of entitlement. The Bush family invented selfish, self-interest.

I am one of those fearful baby boomers that Greenspan thinks should wait to retire. Easy for him and Bush to say. They're rich and calling the shots in their careers. I've worked hard all my life; have been stuck in jobs I hate working with people I despise, making a living, but unable to live much better than I did when I was in college.

I still buy generic groceries; search for the cheapest gas; drive the cheapest cars for at least 10 years or until they die, whichever comes sooner; am wearing the same clothes for more than 20 years; go to Supercuts; and go to morning movies to catch the bargain matinees.

I've managed to save a few dollars and have accumulated a retirement account. I want some enjoyment before I die. I want to retire early. I am going to retire early; Bush and Greenspan be damned.
